Key points of the corridor development plan in Burkina Faso Located between 1,000 and 1,200 km from the coast, Burkina Faso is the only landlocked country in the four countries of the WAGRIC subregion and high transport costs weigh heavily on its economy. While mineral resources and cotton are exported outside the subregion, agricultural and livestock products are also exported to neighbouring countries and well known to coastal consumers. However, their production and export volumes are not large enough to modernise the transportation infrastructure of the North-South corridors.
Considering the significant growth potential of coastal consumer markets, Burkina Faso can increase its production and export to sub-regional coastal markets.
Fortunately, the coastal countries are maintaining the transport infrastructure of the north-south corridors (road and rail) linking the coastal and inland areas, and each is planning to modernise this infrastructure (WAGRIC strongly supports this policy) to reduce inequalities and develop inland industries.
Burkina Faso also has a window of opportunity to promote economic sectors geared to coastal markets and to improve North-South links with other WAGRIC countries.
