Benin
Benin is located in West Africa, in the tropical zone between the equator and the Tropic of Cancer (between the parallels 6°30′ and 12°30′ north and the meridians 1° and 30°40′ east).
It is bounded :
- to the north by the Republic of Niger for 277 km, 120 km of which is bounded by the Niger River;
- to the north-west by Burkina Faso (386 km);
- to the west by Togo (651 km);
- to the east by Nigeria (809 km)
- and to the south by the Atlantic Ocean (121 km).
Its length is 700 km from north to south and its width varies from 125 km (along the coast) to 325 km (at the Tanguieta-Ségbana parallel).
The country is relatively flat. There are five (05) natural regions :
- A low, sandy coastal strip bordered by lagoons (coconut groves);
- A central, hilly and monotonous plain, which rises gradually from 200 to 400 m from south to north around Nikki, then descends to the Niger valley and the Kandi basin. The Kandi Basin to the north-east is a plain drained by the Sota River and its tributaries, which flow into very wide valleys;
- The Atacora range in the northwest, where the highest point in the country is Mount Aledjo (658m);
- The vast Gourma plain in the far north-west, between Atacora and the borders with Burkina Faso and Togo.
- Wet savannah covers most of the country. A few patches of primary forest remain in the south and centre. Croplands, swamps and the vast palm grove of Lower Benin are found in the rest of the country.
